Many advertising agencies use confusing words to describe how well your ads are doing. They will tell you about "reach," "impressions," or "click-through rates." While these words sound professional, they do not tell you if your business is actually making money.
To grow your business, you only need to understand one simple number: Cost Per Acquisition, or CPA.
What is Cost Per Acquisition?
In plain English, Cost Per Acquisition is the amount of money you spend on advertising to get one new customer to buy your product.
For example, if you spend one hundred dollars on Facebook ads and those ads get you two new customers, your CPA is fifty dollars. It is that simple.
Why is CPA the Only Number That Matters?
If you do not know your CPA, you cannot know if your ads are making a profit. Let us look at a simple comparison to see why other metrics can be misleading:
| Metric | What It Tells You | Why It Can Lie |
|---|---|---|
| Impressions | How many times your ad was shown on a screen. | People can see your ad and ignore it. You still pay for the space. |
| Clicks | How many times people clicked on your ad. | People can click your ad by mistake or leave your site without buying. |
| Cost Per Acquisition | Exactly how much you paid to get a real, paying customer. | It never lies. It tells you the exact cost of your business growth. |
How to Find Your CPA
Finding your CPA is very easy. You do not need any complex software. You just need to divide your total ad spend by the number of sales you got from those ads.
Total Money Spent on Ads ÷ Total Number of Sales = Your Cost Per Acquisition
If you sell a product for one hundred dollars, and it costs you eighty dollars to make and ship that product, you have twenty dollars of profit left. This means your CPA must be less than twenty dollars for your ads to make money. If your CPA is twenty-five dollars, you are losing five dollars on every sale.
